"Deep clean everything once a month" is easy advice to give and hard advice to follow. A more useful approach is matching frequency to how each area actually gets dirty.
Weekly
- Bathrooms — soap scum, limescale, and grime build up fast in a wet, warm environment
- Kitchen benchtops and sink
- Floors in high-traffic areas
Monthly
- Oven interior
- Behind and underneath large kitchen appliances
- Skirting boards and door frames
- Inside the microwave, beyond a quick wipe-down
Every 3–6 months
- Carpets and rugs — even with regular vacuuming, deep soil sits below the surface
- Upholstery
- Windows, inside and out
- Light fittings and ceiling fans
- Grout lines in bathrooms and kitchens
Every 6–12 months
- Curtains and blinds
- Mattress deep clean
- Behind the fridge and other rarely-moved appliances
- Exterior areas — driveways, paths, and building surfaces
Households with pets, kids, or allergies
Any of the schedules above should shift a step tighter. Pet hair and dander, food mess from young kids, and allergen build-up in carpet and upholstery all move faster than the "average household" numbers most schedules are built around.
The honest answer to "how often" is: often enough that you're staying ahead of build-up, not catching up on it. If a deep clean already feels overdue, that's the schedule adjusting itself.
